The brief

One club. One brand. One digital home.

Needham Market FC came to AJH with a 100-year story, four football teams under one badge — Marketmen, Market Women, Reserves, Academy — a full-time academy, a 3,000-capacity ground, a clubhouse, a 3G pitch, hospitality boxes, season tickets, matchday tickets, sponsor packages and a community of supporters. And a brochure-style website that handled none of it properly. The job was to design and build a digital platform that could carry all of it — live, transactional, on-brand, fast — and keep it managed long after launch.

What we delivered

The biggest digital build in the club's history.

A full brand refresh, a one-club website, live data integrations, a transactional booking system, and a managed-service relationship to keep it all moving. Twelve months of work, four months in active build, then continuous improvement ever since.

01

Brand refresh

A modernised brand system honouring the 1919 crest — red #C8102E, gold #B68A3A, cream #F4EFE3 — restored, refined and codified into a usable digital palette. Editorial typography (Inter + Instrument Serif italic) for a confident matchday voice.

02

One-club architecture

A site structure that gives the Marketmen, Market Women, Reserves and Academy their own surface area while keeping the club's "One Club, one community" message at the centre. Every team. One badge. One nav.

03

Live fixtures & results API

Direct integration with FA Full-Time for fixtures, results, form (W-W-W-D-L), goal scorers, league position and live league table. No manual updating, no stale weekend data.

04

Live league table API

Real-time Southern League Premier Central table embedded on the homepage and fixtures pages. Position, played, GD, points — all pulled from upstream and cached at the edge for performance.

05

SQL ticketing system

Custom-built SQL-backed ticketing platform for matchday and season tickets — fixture catalogue, seat/standing inventory, member discounts, secure payment, e-ticket QR delivery and at-gate validation hooks.

06

SQL venue booking system

3G pitch hire, function rooms, conferencing, hospitality boxes and matchday boxes — all bookable online with real-time availability, conflict prevention, T&Cs gating, member rates and admin oversight.

07

My Account & supporter portal

Authenticated supporter accounts: tickets, bookings, order history, saved details, season ticket renewals and academy enrolment status. The club's most-used page after the homepage.

08

Club shop

Branded matchday merchandise, retro shirts, scarves, training kit and gift cards. Tickets sold alongside merch from a single basket — one checkout, one customer record.

09

Sponsor system

Tiered sponsor architecture — shirt sponsor, stand sponsors, training-kit sponsors, matchday packages — each with a dedicated panel, link policy and renewal cadence. Sponsor decks generated from the site data.

10

News / "From the terraces"

Editorial newsroom with match reports, academy stories, signings, transfers, women's football, partner pieces and long-form interviews. Schema-tagged for AEO surfacing on Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT.

11

NeedhamFC TV

Video-first matchday content — match highlights, post-match interviews, hospitality reels — embedded directly into the site with structured-data tagging so episodes surface in search.

12

Academy presence

A dedicated academy section covering the full-time post-16 programme, BTEC pathway, coaching, fixtures, signings and player stories — pitched both at prospective students and at recruiters.

13

Bloomfields page

Long-form ground story since 1949 — capacity, stands, hospitality boxes, the Treadfirst Stand, the Terry Ingram Stand — built as a sponsorable surface in its own right.

14

Welfare & safeguarding

FA-compliant welfare, safeguarding and EDI policies surfaced where parents, players and visitors actually look. Treated as a core part of the digital footprint, not a buried PDF.

15

Photography direction

Matchday and academy photoshoot direction, image system, crop standards, and a managed media library so the site is fed with fresh, on-brand imagery week after week.

16

SEO + AEO programme

Schema-rich markup across SportsOrganization, SportsEvent, Article, BlogPosting, Event, Product, Offer, BreadcrumbList. Built so AI assistants surface the right answer about Needham Market FC, automatically.

17

Performance & mobile

Sub-2s load on 4G, mobile-first across every flow including ticketing and booking. Built for the supporter checking the team news on a phone, on the way to the ground.

18

Ongoing management

Weekly fixture refresh, new player profiles, sponsor changes, news pieces, academy updates, hospitality offers, ticket releases — AJH runs the platform, the club runs the football.

Architecture

Live data, transactional flows, edited content — all on one stack.

Three logical layers, one customer record, one identity surface. Built so the club can run their business — and so AJH can keep it healthy long-term.

How the platform fits together.
A three-layer architecture: editorial content, live sport data, and transactional commerce. Each layer is independently maintainable, and they all share one supporter identity.

How we ran it

Twelve months of work, four months in active build.

A project this size doesn't ship in three weeks. Needham Market FC was structured as a true product programme — discovery, design, build, integrate, deploy, run — with the club inside every decision.

Discover → Brand → Design → Build → Integrate → Deploy → Run
Seven phases. Weekly working sessions with the club. One unified launch.
i.

Discovery

Stakeholder interviews across first team, women's, reserves, academy, hospitality, commercial, welfare and supporters. A clear map of what the platform needed to do — and what it was emphatically NOT going to be.

  • One-club narrative locked in early: Marketmen, Market Women, Reserves, Academy
  • Transactional surfaces scoped: tickets, season tickets, venue, 3G pitch, hospitality
  • Live data scoped: fixtures, results, table, form, scorers, attendances
ii.

Brand refresh

The 1919 crest stayed — that's the point. Around it we restored the historic red, refined the gold, calmed the cream surfaces and codified the lot into a digital-first palette and type system. The brand is now usable in print, on a phone, on a banner and on a kit.

  • Palette codified: red #C8102E, deep red #8B0A1F, gold #B68A3A, cream #F4EFE3, ink #1B1B22
  • Type system: Inter for matchday, Instrument Serif italic for editorial moments
  • "One Club, one community" landed as the line that drives the whole site
iii.

Design

Mobile-first design across the homepage, fixtures, squad, news, watch, academy, Bloomfields, shop, bookings, account and partner pages. Every flow prototyped before a line of production code was written.

  • 26 unique page layouts, designed mobile-first then scaled to desktop
  • Ticket and venue booking flows designed end-to-end as core product
  • Sponsor surfaces designed as a sellable inventory, not a thank-you list
iv.

Build

Custom front-end built for speed and resilience. SQL backend designed schema-first — fixtures, members, bookings, orders, tickets, content — with admin tooling for the club to run their own business once handed over.

  • Schema-first SQL: fixtures, seats, bookings, orders, members, content
  • Admin tooling so the club can release tickets, manage hospitality, run the business
  • Static rendering on top of dynamic data for fast public pages
v.

Integrate

The hardest part. Live data feeds from the FA's Full-Time system into the public site. Card payments wired into ticketing and booking. Email confirmations. QR e-tickets. Hospitality reservation lifecycle. All tested through real fixture weekends in staging before going live.

  • FA Full-Time → fixtures, results, league table, scorers, form, attendances
  • Card payments → tickets, bookings, shop, season ticket renewals
  • Email + QR e-ticket pipeline, with gate-scan readiness
vi.

Deploy

Custom domain, SSL, managed hosting, sitemap, indexing, GA4, analytics dashboards, schema rich-snippet testing — and a live cut-over on a non-matchday so the club's busiest day wasn't day one. Indexed across Google and Bing within hours.

  • Domain, DNS, SSL, sitemap, robots, structured data, Search Console
  • GA4 + custom dashboards for tickets, bookings, news performance
  • Soft-launch window with the squad and academy parents first
vii.

Run

The site doesn't stand still. New fixtures every week, new signings, new academy stories, new sponsor refreshes, hospitality offers, ticket releases. AJH manages it; the club focuses on football.

  • Weekly fixture / news / squad refresh, plus event-driven publishing
  • Quarterly performance review in plain English with the commercial team
  • Continuous improvement on conversion, accessibility and AEO surfacing
Visual system

1919 red, refreshed for a digital decade.

The historic crest, the historic colours, brought into a system that works on a phone, on a kit and on a banner. Editorial italic moments break up the matchday all-caps to give the brand a voice — proud, local, modern.
